As y’all remember, I super duper love making playlists – and my weapon of choice is Spotify.
You can apply any of my music magick methods to any music system that lets you make a playlist, or even burn smaller playlists – old school style – onto CDs! 💿
One playlist I use ALL the time is my “Instrumental Witchy Songs” playlist.
It’s the perfect shuffle-playlist for ✨magickal feels✨ while doing tarot & oracle readings, spell work, ritual, etc. If you want to just go ahead and steal my playlist, here ya go!
If you want to learn how to create your own, read on!
First – create a new playlist (easy enough!)
Start adding (instrumental) songs that you know always make you ✨feel magickal✨ – whatever the definition of that is to you.
Avoid any lyrics that are words. Aim more for background chanting or “oooos” and “ahhhs” – the goal is to help you keep your focus on your oracle/tarot reading/etc. 🔮
This is just my personal preference – if you love a song that won’t distract you but it has lyrics, and you know it will enhance your mix, add it!
From there, start listening to more music that you think might give you those ✨magickal feels✨ – I listen to different movie soundtracks for work and reading and that’s how I’ve built my playlist. I’ve also listened to other’s magickal playlists and picked songs that resonated with me. (Heck, listen to my playlist and pull the songs that resonate most with YOU.)
Another way I know a song resonates is if it makes me feel “frisson” – essentially, a music moment that is so powerful that I get tiny goosebumps. Not everyone has this – so don’t feel bad if you’ve never felt this – but if you notice that certain songs make the hairs on your arms stand on end, add it to your list.
You can also use your magick feels playlist to further enhance your tarot and oracle reading. There will be a natural rise and fall to the songs once you get enough on your playlist. Some very powerful and magickal moments await you when the right song comes on at the right moment during a reading!
I’ve had a few fun moments of synchronicity as well using this mix – songs with elements in them occasionally line up with an element that dominates the tarot spread, or the card I’m currently reading – sorta like “HEY PAY EXTRA ATTENTION TO THIS BIT.” 💖
This mix is ALSO great for spellwork if you just need some magickal background feels while you do a ritual. I do a lot of spur of the moment spells and mini-rituals, so having a mix I can throw on shuffle and focus on – well, getting into focus – makes spontaneous spellwork easier.
While I don’t suggest lyrics for this mix – I do have a mix JUST full of songs with lyrics that also give me magickal feels and frisson.
If you’re just dipping your toes into magick and don’t know where to start – try making a playlist like the one I’ve listed. Play around with what makes you physically and mentally feel magickal – then write down the results in your Book of Shadows or magick workings journal. (If you don’t have one of those yet, find a blank notebook and START! 📓 You can even just keep a set of digital files on Google docs.)
There are so many ways to use music to enhance your magick workings, such as making randomizer oracles, playlists that are created with intent for the background of your spell, or even a playlist that itself is a spell.
Test out what works best for you, what makes YOU personally feel that “magickal” feeling and go from there to rock on with your magickal self.
