How to Get Witchy and Learn Magick

How Do I Learn Magick?

If you’re constantly exerting influence on reality, it’s a good idea to learn how to do it well.

– Damien Echols

With an eye open to the unseen and a heart open to the unknown, we awaken ourselves to our power and embrace our magick.

We put one foot in front of the other, we experiment, we play, we seek out where our magick has been hiding.

The truth is, it’s been there all along. You’ve been doing magick this entire time, now it’s time to understand how the heck it works and how to wield it it mindfully. 🌟

Much like your fingerprints or your experience of consciousness, magick is an experience unique to each individual person. As Martin White says in his What Is Magick essay, “Magick is a deeply personal thing.”

The journey to the center of your magick is one that others like myself can help with, but you won’t fully grock it until you make a point to experience magick.

Here are 10 Ways to Learn Magick

1. Remember: you are magick.

You’re Magickal. Don’t ever forget that.

– Juliet Diaz

If you want to learn magick, first define what you think magick is. Redefine it over and over again as you learn. Eventually, you’ll realize that YOU are magick and you ARE the magick. You’ve been doing magick this entire time.

You constantly influence the world around you with your thoughts, words, and actions, and that’s magick. Now… it’s the time to get intentional with what you’re doing. 😤

This is your journey and you’ll discover it over and over again. You’ll dive deeper into yourself to get a clearer meaning of what magick is & what magick means to you with every magickal experiment you try.

2. Time

The craft of Magick isn’t something you just dabble in – it’s a way of life.

– Juliet Diaz

Give it time. The first drawing you made wasn’t a DaVinci sketch. The first time you held an instrument, you weren’t Mozart. The first spell you cast might not work – and if it does, it certainly isn’t going to work that exact moment (….usually.)

This is a path. As with all good journeys, it will take time. Give it at least a month. But… honestly? If you can, give it a year (and a day.)

Instead of a flash-in-the-pan technique, live with the seasons. Feel how life changes when you work with the cycle of the year. See how the world looks when you are aware of each New Moon and Full Moon.

If you give it time, you’ll no doubt discover what magick is, and what magick means to you. When you feel it and understand it, chances are you’ll be on the magickal path for the rest of your life.

3. Track

Study yourself the way a hunter studies prey. Exploit your own weaknesses to create desired changes within yourself.

– Grant Morrison

Track what you do. Keep a magical record, a Book of Shadows, a Witch’s Journal – whatever you want to call it – to note everything you’re doing. Today’s offhand moment could be tomorrow’s weird synchronicity. 😉

You won’t know how well your magickal experiments are working if you don’t keep track of what you do. Your magick works in very subtle (and not so subtle) ways that you’ll notice if you record what you do.

We all have areas that we’re skilled at. Maybe a spell you created works better during a certain phase of the moon or certain time of the year. By tracking as much relevant information as possible, you’ll hone your magickal abilities further.

4. Focus

Magick is the art of focusing your will or intent in order to bring about change in yourself and influence your environment/the world around you.

– Laura Tempest Zakroff

Learn how to focus. Most people think meditation is being able to 100% clear your mind and think of nothing, only focusing on your breath. It’s more than that! There are numerous meditation methods beyond “just stop thinking.”

For example, we have body scan meditations, guided visualizations, even mindfulness during sex… Ooh la la! 😍 Energy work, such as grounding or raising energy, uses the same tools you learn from different kinds of meditations.

One tip from Mindfulness for Fidgety Skeptics by Dan Harris: when you’re meditating, it’s okay to experiment, fail, and try again. To be honest, this works for magick and life as well.

When you’re doing a focused meditation, you’re NOT going to be able to have a perfectly clear mind – and that’s kind of the point! You’re LEARNING how to clear your mind, you’re not going to start off with a perfectly clear mind.

If you think during a meditation – notice that you’re thinking, and try again. This is how you separate out the you that has chatter-brain thoughts (💭💭💭), and the you that observes (🤔).

5. Discover Yourself

The most important tool for any witch is a strong sense of self.

– Jenn Stevens

Discover who you are. You’ve spent years in a world that has tried to cover up the authentic version of you with messaging about who you’re “supposed” to be. These messages encourage you to remain powerless and oblivious to who you actually are.

Figure out what’s going on in your mind. Thought work, while not specifically witchy, is a great way to peel back the layers of your pre-programmed thoughts from years of conditioning.

Discover and choose your destiny. Your path is already there. It’s in the meaning of your name, your time of birth. It’s in who you were and what you loved as a child, and what you’re currently drawn to.

Your destiny is still a choice, one that you can make to follow or choose to walk away from. It’s time to wake up and own all that you can be.

6. Synchronicities

The universe is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper

– Eden Phillpotts

In magick, a synchronicity is a meaningful coincidence. Pay attention to synchronicities all around you, track them in your magickal records.

The world is constantly talking to you. When you start to listen, you’ll understand what it’s saying, and to do.

For example, let’s say you’re talking to a friend about how much butterflies mean to you. Then a butterfly passes by right at that moment. That’s a great little coincidence, and if you add meaning to it – it becomes a synchronicity. (Heck, maybe you already have butterflies on the mind and reading this is your synchronicity. 🤯🤯🤯)

With moments like this, I like to look up the meaning behind the symbolism of items. In this butterfly example, it could be that I’m in the process of a personal metamorphosis and ready to change. 🦋

I use the handy-dandy IFTTT “Do Note” button to track synchronicities on the fly. This way, I don’t have to remember when I’m out and about to write it in my Book of Shadows later.

7. Intentions

The only difference between a magician and your average person on the street is that a magician does magick intentionally.

– Damien Echols

Figure out what you want, and what your intentions are, or you’ll get what you don’t want. You’re shaping your life to be what you want – and you can’t do that if you have no clue what you’re seeking.

Get crystal clear on what change you want to bring about. “I have more money” is great – but “I work my dream job that brings in plenty of financial abundance each month” is WAY better. The first means you might find a dollar on the ground. The second means you live the life you want.

Without a clear intention, your magick will be hit and miss, with more misses. The clearer you focus your desire and clarify the outcome of the desire, the more likely you’ll hit the bulls-eye of what you want.

8. Spells

Magick isn’t just spellcraft; it’s understanding flow, recognizing patterns, and getting beyond elbows deep in it all.

– Laura Tempest Zakroff

I know, I know, you never thought we’d get here! The assumed “meat and potatoes” of magick and witchcraft, casting spells. As you can see – there’s so much more to this path than casting spells. Laura Tempest Zakroff describes spellcraft as “metaphysical problem solving” via the “application of magick through means of a formula.”

While it would be great to just grab a dusty old spell book and have the spell work INSTANTLY like a recipe from a cookbook… but it doesn’t quite work like that. Without understanding magick, focused intention, or what the ingredients mean (and mean to you) – you’re going to have a higher-than-average failure rate.

The other thing that’s missing from someone else’s pre-written spell is YOU and YOUR MAGICK. Their spells have THEIR energy in them. Casting someone else’s spell can work, absolutely. But it won’t be as effective as understanding how spells work and crafting your own.

You can absolutely play around with other’s spells – this information isn’t to discourage you. Research what basic meanings behind the ingredients are, get really clear on your intentions, add YOU and your energy to the spell, and cast away my witchlings. 💖

9. Divination

Tarot is not to tell your future, it’s to help you SHAPE your future

– The Cherry Godmother

Tarot cards, runes, and other oracle systems can help enhance your magickal process and journey. They will help you dig deeper into discovering yourself. Divination systems can help you listen to what the magick is trying to tell you. These systems help you understand magick at a deeper level, and they’re just plain fun to play with.

Personally, I love the tarot! It’s something that really resonates with me as a visual artist. Tarot helps you learn the elements of magick, numerology, it can help with spell crafting, path working, digging deeper into your psyche, and even communicating with spirit/the divine/the universe/etc.

Another method I love is bibliomancy. I’ve had some fantastically charged magickal experiences by letting my hand flip to pages in a certain book (like a book of name meanings), or letting my hand be drawn to a book and open to a random page. Like shouting “HOLY CRAP” at the top of my lungs as my page opens to something CRAZY synchronous.

There are soooooo many systems – oracle cards, tarot cards, runes, I Ching, scrying, bibliomancy, etc. Chances are, there’s a system of divination that’s calling out to you. 🔮 I suggest you answer the call.

10. Your Special Gifts

There is no such thing as pure magic, there is only your magic.

– Brianna Saussy

As I mentioned in the last point, I love the tarot. Tarot is something I resonate with and part of my own set of gifts, something that works well for me.

Everyone can unlock any magickal gift with enough practice, but sometimes you find you just have a knack for something. I have friends who just “know” things, friends who can see spiritual apparitions, and friends with magickally green thumbs. These are all part of their special gifts, magick they naturally resonate with.

I used to worry I wasn’t “magick enough” because I knew people who could see things. Once I started to incorporate bibliomancy & tarot into my practice, I started to have way more meaningful, magickal experiences.

A reminder: YOU ARE MAGICK ENOUGH. Even if you haven’t had a lot of success yet, you just need to keep experimenting to find what you’re naturally good at too!

Jump into all areas that interest you and you feel drawn to, keep track of what you’re doing, and you’ll discover that something just “clicks” with one of the many different avenues of magick.

So, what’s next?

There are many ways to learn magick. Whether you want to dip in a toe or cannon ball in, I hope this list helps you get started on your journey. It’s time to ✨awaken your power and embrace your magick.✨
